About Us

The AmeriCares Free Clinics (AFC) were established in 1994 to serve the medical needs of the working poor.  Our mission is to provide free, quality health care to Connecticut's low-income, uninsured residents, while also protecting each patient's dignity and self respect.  We are a 501 (c)(3) organization, separate but affiliated with AmeriCares Foundation.

Volunteers Give … and Receive

Our three clinics in Bridgeport, Norwalk and Danbury are able to offer medical services to thousands of Connecticut residents every year thanks to the dedication of over 300 committed volunteer doctors, nurses, interpreters and administrative personnel.  For services beyond the scope of primary care, an additional 150 community-based specialists volunteer to see our patients in their offices at no charge.

Partners Make it Happen

By joining with key community partners, such as local hospitals, labs and specialists, patients receive comprehensive care including medications, lab work and diagnostic testing at no cost.  We are able to offer our services free of charge thanks to the generosity of corporate and individual donors who provide the critical financial support needed to run three bustling clinics.

Our Patients Are the Best Reward

Our patients come from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds. We serve single mothers working two or three part-time jobs to make ends meet, self-employed contractors, landscapers and others who work jobs that do not offer health insurance. Whether working or unemployed, all earn less than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level and do not have access to public or private health insurance. Without our clinics, many of our patients would rely on emergency rooms for primary care services, or worse, delay care until they have a medical emergency.

Our Logo

Our logo has great significance to us and tells our story in a very simple way.   This triad symbolizes who we are and how we do what we do. . . .

AmeriCares Free clinics, health care for low income citizens.

The three intertwined figures in our logo represent the community through whom financial support and donated services are provided; our volunteers who selflessly give their time and expertise; and the patients we serve. The shading of the figures demonstrates our pledge to deliver culturally sensitive care to our diverse population.  All the figures are joined by a heart representing the compassionate support exhibited at our clinics.
