Stamford, Conn. – Sept. 21, 2015 – Dr. Stephen Winter has been named medical director of the Bob Macauley AmeriCares Free Clinic in Norwalk. In his new role, Dr. Winter will serve as an advocate in the local community, provide guidance on clinic policies and procedures and assist with volunteer recruitment. The clinic serves more than 700 low-income uninsured residents of Norwalk and surrounding towns.
Dr. Winter, a longtime Ridgefield resident, has been volunteering at the clinic for 20 years. He is looking forward to taking on a more active role after recently retiring as the chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Norwalk Hospital. He is also a clinical professor of medicine at Yale University.
“AmeriCares patients have scheduled appointments, experienced volunteer doctors spend the time that is needed to provide high-quality compassionate care, and the support staff is engaged, enthusiastic and caring,” Dr. Winter said. “The patient is the center of everything. This is what medical care is supposed to look like whether you are rich or poor, insured or uninsured.”
Dr. Winter has also been deeply involved with the free clinics’ parent organization, serving on the AmeriCares Board of Directors from 2003 to 2014 and participating in at least 20 relief missions.
“The free clinics represent a natural extension of the AmeriCares mission to support health on a global platform,” Dr. Winter said.
