Docs Tear it Up For a Good Cause

The Fairfield County Medical Association recently sponsored its fourth ShredFest fundraiser for AmeriCares Free Clinics. Physicians from 22 medical practices destroyed 400 boxes of outdated records weighing more than 12 tons during the June 2 event in Norwalk. ShredFest provides an easy and environmentally friendly way for doctors to rid their offices of old files while benefitting a great organization, said Fairfield County Medical Association Executive Director Mark Thompson.

“Home shredders are okay for little jobs, but most doctors need to discard large volumes of confidential documents which require an industrial shredding machine,” Thompson said.

Doctors pay a $5 fee per box to recycle their paperwork through Infoshred, which donates its services, and the proceeds benefit our program. Over the years, the event has raised more than $9,000 for our clinics. The medical association has been a staunch supporter since we opened our first clinic in 1994, and has been instrumental in recruiting volunteers and raising awareness for our program, said AmeriCares Free Clinics Associate Director Terri McCartney.

“We have maintained a close working relationship with AmeriCares over the years, so it was the first organization that came to mind when selecting a beneficiary,” Thompson said.
