Fairfield County Community Foundation Awards $20,000 Grant to AmeriCares Free Clinics
CONTACT: Donna Porstner: (203) 658-9579 Stamford, CT—The Fairfield County Community Foundation has awarded a $20,000 competitive grant to the AmeriCares Free Clinics in Norwalk, Bridgeport and Danbury. The clinics provide free, quality health care to low-income, uninsured residents of the surrounding communities. Since 1994, the AmeriCares Free Clinics have delivered more than $25 million worth of medical services to over 17,000 area residents. Since the clinics accept no federal funding, they rely on donations from supporters like the Fairfield County Community Foundation to provide free, quality medical care for the uninsured. The grant will be used to defray operating expenses at all three clinics, which have seen an increased demand for services due to the recession. Patient visits increased by about 20 percent over the last 12 months as area residents lost jobs and employer-sponsored health insurance. The Fairfield County Community Foundation promotes the growth of community and regional philanthropy to improve the quality of life throughout Fairfield County. Individuals, families, corporations and organizations can establish charitable funds and contribute to existing funds. The Foundation also provides philanthropic advisory services and develops and leads initiatives to tackle critical community issues. It is in compliance with the Council on Foundations’ national standards for community foundations. The Foundation has awarded over $110 million in grants to nonprofits in Fairfield County and beyond.
