Bridgeport, CT (September 20, 2004) -- AmeriCares Free Clinic of Bridgeport is expanding its services with the addition of a third weekly session at a new site, the United Congregational Church at 877 Park Avenue, effective September 23.
This mobile medical unit offers free, quality medical care to eligible patients 16 years of age and older. Health care services provided include diagnosis and treatment of episodic and chronic illness and minor injuries, prescription medicines, and referrals for other services as needed. In addition, the clinic offers prescribed laboratory/diagnostic testing through the generosity of Bridgeport Hospital, St. Vincent's Medical Center and Quest Diagnostics. Services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, although the clinic will schedule appointments for those needing school and pre-employment physical exams. Volunteer physicians and registered nurses staff the clinic and are assisted by trained, non-medical volunteers including interpreters for patients who do not speak English.
"We are adding this third session in response to an increased demand from within the community for our services," said Sharon Joslin, APRN, director of the Bridgeport Clinic. "As the recent U.S. Census Bureau report showed, the number of uninsured and underinsured continues to rise in our area, and our mission at AmeriCares Free Clinics is to provide this deserving population with quality health care."
The new session will be open to patients on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. at the United Congregational Church. AmeriCares Free Clinic of Bridgeport currently has two other weekly sessions at the Newfield Library on 1230 Stratford Avenue, Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
AmeriCares Free Clinics provides free primary care to uninsured residents in Fairfield County. Nearly 500 volunteer doctors, nurses, non-medical volunteers and interpreters have provided over $9 million in quality health care during the last 10 years at clinic locations in Bridgeport, Norwalk and Danbury.
